First Time in Israel: What to Prioritize

You do not need to see everything on a first trip. You need the right first map of the country, and enough space to actually experience the places instead of racing through them.

Give Jerusalem the most weight

No other city compresses so much of the religious, historical and political story of the country into a walkable space, so it usually deserves more than one rushed pass. See Jerusalem in one day for how to prioritize, and how many days you need there.

Add Tel Aviv-Yafo for contrast

After the density of Jerusalem, a day of modern Israeli life, Mediterranean rhythm and the older streets of Jaffa helps you see the country as it lives today, not only as it once was. If you are short on time, Jaffa or Tel Aviv in half a day can help you choose.

Make the drive to Masada and the Dead Sea

Few places combine desert geology, Roman-era history and such a dramatic landscape in a single day. See Masada and the Dead Sea in one day and what to know before floating.

The Galilee, if the trip allows it

For groups with a Christian focus, or simply more time, the villages and shoreline of the Sea of Galilee add a different pace and a different part of the story. See Galilee in one day.

Let your interests decide the rest

Beyond that core, genuine interest should decide: the Negev for nature and geology, or the north for a mix of history and landscape. There is no single correct itinerary, and some travelers will reasonably choose a different order.

Choose your timing and your pace

Dates change the trip: Shabbat from Friday afternoon, holidays and summer heat all affect hours, transport and comfort. Read the best time to visit Israel and what changes during Shabbat, and see how to get around without a car.

How many days?

For a day-by-day sample, compare Israel in 5 days and Israel in 7 days. Traveling with kids? Read Israel with children.

Tell Ari what brought you to Israel, and he will help you choose what matters most.
